Crowd-funded miniseries exploring still-existent issues of race comes to NOLA

NEW ORLEANS, 5 October 2013 – Passion to reinstate alternatives to popular-demand reality television fuels the cast and crew behind upcoming production ‘For A Dark Skin Girl,’ which is slated to film in and around New Orleans, Louisiana this November. Inspired by real-life events from writer/director Brigid Turner’s childhood, the miniseries’ pilot introduces its audience to a 1950s love story set in a town polluted with issues of race. “It’s not about ‘dark’ skin versus ‘light’ skin,” Turner explains in the project’s crowdfunding video, “but being comfortable in your skin.” Funding for the project is being promoted on Indiegogo, with the hope of raising $25,000 by the 14 of October. Contributions will be used for the equipment, cast, and crew required to produce the pilot.
The Brooklyn-native director has New York crew flying down to join local-hired cast, crew, and film students in the coming weeks as pre-production eases into filming. A final fundraising event will be held in New Orleans on October 12 starting at 7pm to celebrate the end of the project’s Indiegogo campaign. The event will be hosted at the Zeitgeist on O.C. Haley Boulevard and will screen short films The Climate, The Many Breakups of Lincoln Rose, and All for Jessica, along with a presentation of the short film For A Dark Skin Girl, on which the new miniseries is expanding.
